Canon RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS, is basically the same as RF85mm F1.2 L USM in appearance, and the box model and lens surface logo have been changed from “RF85mm F1.2 L USM” to “RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS”. The lens still has the sense of component as always, the design of the RF series, matte black, feel very good.
Canon RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS and RF85mm F1.2 L USM, specifications are all the same: 9 groups of 13 optical structures, including 9 circular aperture blades, the minimum aperture is fhand 16, the maximum magnification is 0.12x, and the nearest focusing distance is 0.85m. The lens focuses on a USM ring ultrasonic focusing motor. They all weigh 1195 grams.
On the appearance of the whole lens, the biggest bright spot must be the “DEFOCUS SMOOTHING” on the mirror, that is, the full name of “DS”. It is a very simple English phrase, but it contains countless research and development efforts of Canon technical engineers. There is also a “Canon 85” in the middle of the mirror, which is an important logo of the King of the Mirror. Other special lenses, including UD, ground aspheric, BR, ASC, and RF85mm F1.2 L USM, are the same.
Mirror body button, auto-focus and manual focus switch button, which is convenient for photographers to operate according to the actual shooting situation. On the other hand, the focus distance switch below adjusts the focus speed according to the distance of the object being photographed. When shooting over a long distance, 1.5m-∞ focus is even faster.
The components that come with the lens, the sunshade, are also very good in workmanship. In order to prevent messy light from entering the lens, the hood can play a very good role in blocking the light. At the same time, the sunshade also supports reverse buckle.
, DS (smooth defocusing) coating, which is one of the evaporation coatings developed by Canon, is called “smooth defocusing”. The utility model has the characteristics of high light transmittance at the center and low light transmittance at the edge. Indeed, there is a big difference between the lens surface and the RF85mm F1.2L USM, and the magic color is more obvious.
The amount of light passing through the lens coated with DS decreases gradually from the center to the edge, thus the virtual effect of soft and smooth contour is obtained. In theory, most of the optical properties of Canon RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS are the same as those of Canon RF85mm F1.2 L USM. Next, let”s do a simple test from inside and outside the focus, and keep the focus on the actual shooting part.
To test the sharpness, we still use a very intuitive way to photograph buildings over long distances. Take 100% screenshots of the center and edges for direct comparison. In addition, if you use this lens, you need to upgrade EOS R to version 1.6.0 (add RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS lens support), otherwise the edge brightness will be reduced when FB1.2 is fully open.
It was to be expected. This comparison is really a test of eyesight. I think the sharpness of both the center and the edge of fhammer 1.2 tends to be extremely high, and it can be maintained all the way up to fhand 11, which is really amazing. It didn’t drop much when fhand 16, which is really a phenomenon I have never seen before. I don’t know if it’s an illusion this time, but I think RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS is slightly better than RF85mm F1.2 L USM, in terms of sharpness, so I can boldly say that RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS, with full aperture and even the entire aperture range is the sharpest lens I have ever seen.
In the last test, we confirmed that the RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS has an extremely sharp performance. After seeing the sharp focus as sharp as the blade, we looked out of focus. How smooth is smooth defocus? Is it really creamy?
In order to give you a more intuitive view of the effect changes, I made the test results into a motion picture. However, there must be a loss of picture quality in GIF, so we can refer to it for reference. The next test content is the real picture quality performance part. The special effect of smooth defocusing is achieved by Canon implanting two DS coatings inside the lens. The transition effect is really smooth and the background outline is softer.
What’s interesting about DS coating is that it has a smooth transition effect not only on the background, but also on the foreground.
The foreground vegetation also has a soft and virtual effect when photographed with full open aperture of fhand 1.2.
Even if it is our daily shoot of flowers, when the aperture is fully open, the virtual effect is really very soft and beautiful.
Use fstick 1.2 aperture to take some landscapes or still life close-ups, which is not what most photographers would do. But because our thinking is limited to “small aperture shooting scenery”, we get fewer and fewer surprises in our photography.
And what I want to say is that even if I don’t have a model to shoot, I can only take a walk around the park to see what plants are worth photographing. I will really be overjoyed to use the illusion of ultra-shallow depth of field brought about by fstick 1.2. It is undeniable that the real use of RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS is, of course, portrait shooting. Otherwise, how else can it be called the King of Mirror?
RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS is obviously aimed at photographers who have very high requirements for out-of-focus softening. With the new canon self-developed DS coating, coupled with the extreme aperture property of the lens itself, especially in the colorful lighting environment at night, you will take unprecedented portrait photos.
The above photos are shot with the maximum aperture of RF85mm F1.2. I mainly shoot from the point of view of the bust and full-body portraits of the model, and choose the common commercial square as the background to show you the strength of the F1.2 L USM DS in the actual shooting. I didn’t use any supplementary lights or equipment for this shooting, only ambient light. It was cloudy on the day of shooting, and most likely we could only rely on outdoor street lamps and indoor paving lights. Because of the large aperture of FRB 1.2, the ISO, screen can be more pure without much improvement on the safety shutter.
The feeling is really subtle. Different from the previous virtual effect, the brand-new feeling of air cutting, the character’s main body seems to be in harmony with the background, which is really fascinating. The whole body virtual effect of fhand 1.2 is excellent. The closer the distance is, the more obvious the dispersion of the point light source is, and it is the best when it reaches the nearest 0.85 m focus distance. I think only RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS can match this effect-it’s really the king in the mirror.
When the RF85mm F1.2 L USM was launched, Canon announced the RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS version at the same time. This is the first dual version of the RF card lens. Because of the particularity of DS coating, it seems to be more suitable for 85mm focus rather than 50mm focus. The visual range of the 85mm lens narrows the background, which makes it easier for the point light source to become virtual.
Summary of advantages and disadvantages of Canon RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS Lens.
Advantages.
Shortcomings.
1. There is no IS anti-shaking mechanism.
Two。. Expensive.
For a long time, Canon’s 85mm focus has been called the best portrait shot. Even in the era of EF bayonet, EF 85mm fhand 1.2 L II USM is very popular with photographers. Now that we have entered the era of RF bayonet, the imaging of RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS has reached the peak where we can hardly find any shortcomings. I think it is the artifact that portrait photographers look forward to most. Of course, the price of the RF85mm F1.2 L USM DS is much more expensive than that of the RF85mm F1.2 L USM, and the lack of lens anti-shake also tests the photographer’s ability. The smooth defocus 85mm fixed focus lens has appeared, but I am looking forward to Canon’s next move. Will it be RF135mmF2?
