Product unpacking and disassembly

The packing box of HP SSD EX920 M.2 is still the usual style of Hewlett-Packard. The black background color, model, capacity, PCI-e logo, NVMe logo and product promotional drawings are all printed on the front to tell you about the product simply and clearly. Product promotion map from far to near, from dark to bright, has the feeling of high-end products.

On the back, it”s the same multilingual disclaimer from Hewlett-Packard, as well as more than a dozen security certifications. There is also a gold + 2 logo at the bottom, which is Hewlett-Packard’s latest extended warranty. The HP SSD EX920 M.2 has been increased from the original 3-year warranty to 5-year warranty, which is quite good.

Open the box and you can see the protagonist, HP SSD EX920 M.2.

The accessories have only one manual and one screw for installation, which is designed to serve as a SSD background, that is, a white space in the middle, a font up and down, and a sponge pad that is also affixed to secure the SSD.

A label on the front completely covers the components on the PCB with information such as product model, 5-year warranty and safety certification.

When you come to the back, you can see that there is a cache and two flash memories, so you can see that the SSD uses a double-sided layout, and the thermal performance is not so good compared to the one-sided layout.

Let’s tear off this sticker and take a look at the real face of this SSD.

The first is this master chip, the model is HP H8038, is a custom SMI (Huirong) SM 2262, a positioning high-end master, using PCI-e 3.0×4 channel, NVMe 1.3 protocol. This master control is used on many high-end SSD, among which the more well-known one is the Intel 760p. Hewlett-Packard equipped it with a thin copper heatsink and coated with an antioxidant material.

When it comes to the cache part, this is a cache chip from South Asia Science and Technology. The model is NT5CC256M16EP-EK, with a capacity of 512MB, one for each front and back, and a total of 1024MB (1GB). Dual-channel cache can better improve the speed of reading and writing.

Next to the flash memory particle model is the BW29F2T08EWHAF, 64-layer 3D TLC NAND flash memory, a single 256GB, there are 2 on each side, a total of 4, can provide 1024GB (1TB) storage capacity.

Summary:Although the HP SSD EX920 M.2 1TB has a double-sided particle layout, the heat dissipation performance has been reduced. However, the dual-channel on-board cache is used, which is a very good improvement for the transmission performance of SSD. From the disassembly point of view, this combination is still very good, I do not know how the performance, let’s test it.

Performance testing

Let’s start testing the performance of this SSD. Before you start, open CDI to check the information of this SSD.

As can be seen from CDI, this SSD uses the PCI-e 3.0×4 channel and uses the NVMe 1.3 standard.

Using CDM to test the read and write speed, we can see that HP SSD EX920 M.2 1TB can read and write sequentially under the 1GB file.3174.9MB/s 、 1732.6MB/s., 4K random read and write.65.49MB/s 、 151.1MB/s.. When you come to the 8GB file, the sequential read and write speed is.3171.7MB/s 、 1707.7MB/s.4K read and write speed.65.11MB/s 、 148.6MB/s..

When you come to AS SSD Benchmark, under the 1GB file, the sequential read and write speed is.2750.97MB/s 、 1662.29MB/s.4K random read and write speed.60.63MB/s 、 139.18MB/s.. After being promoted to the 10GB file, the sequential read and write speed is.2774.76MB/s 、 1631.88MB/s.4K random read and write speed is.61.61MB/s 、 136.36MB/s..

Using Anvil’s Storage Utilities to test, HP SSD EX920 M.2 1TB can achieve sequential read and write speed.2730.67MB/s 、 1311.14MB/s.4K random read and write speed.62.04MB/s 、 146.58MB/s..

Using the ATTO Disk Benchmark test, you can see that its maximum read and write speed is.2.86GB/s 、 1.68GB/s.. When we turn on bypassing the write cache, the highest sequential read and write speed is.2.86GB/s 、 1.70GB/s..

When we come to TxBENCH, the test results show that the sequential read and write speed is.3161.858MB/s 、 1841.4MB/s.4K random read and write speed.63.562MB/s 、 145.944MB/s..

Through the test results of Disk Speed Test, we can see that SSD supports various resolutions and frames under Apple’s Proress 422 encoding, uncompressed RAW format and YUV 4:2:2 format with 10bit bit width.Since the maximum speed limit of the read speed test is 2000MB, we will only refer to the table below. You can see that this HP SSD EX920 M.2 1TB supports all of the above formats.Even the highest specification 4K60 frames can be supported..

After a period of high-load data transmission, we tested the temperature of the HP SSD EX920 M.2 1TB. As can be seen from the picture, the highest surface temperature of this SSD is.87.3 °C.Mainly concentrated in the main control position, this kind of high-performance NVMe SSD will generate a certain amount of heat, and this temperature is acceptable. It is still recommended to be equipped with a heat sink when using it, but today’s high-end motherboards generally have M.2 slot heat dissipation armor, so there is no need to worry too much about it.

Summary:Judging from the test results, the reading and writing speed of this HP SSD EX920 M.2 1TB is basically as fast as the advertised 3200MB/s and 1800MB, which is very good, belonging to the level of flagship SSD. From the temperature test, we can see that the heat generation of high-performance NVMe SSD is very large, so it is best to be equipped with a heat sink, which can make the SSD release performance better.

Summary

With the popularity of SSD, the SSD market has shifted from SATA3 to higher-speed NVMe SSD, while HP, as a major brand in the PC market, has also begun to launch NVMe SSD. And this flagship positioning of the HP SSD EX920 M.2 1TB is naturally the vanguard. It has entered the high-end NVMe SSD market with the reading and writing speed of 3200MB/s and 1800MB/s, which adds a new choice to the high-end NVMe SSD market where brands choose relatively fixed.

In these high-end NVMe SSD, although there is no lack of a variety of strong competitors, but their prices are also very expensive. On the contrary, HP SSD EX920 M.2256GB is 449 yuan, 512GB is 799 yuan, and 1TB is 1699 yuan, which gives it a price advantage in these competitions, and its price is even unbeatable in 1TB.

And Hewlett-Packard recently increased the warranty of the SSD from three years to five years, which can be enjoyed by even users who bought it before, and is still very conscientious. If you are one of those players who want to try the mid-to-high-end NVMe SSD, but do not have much budget, then it is really a good product in the high-end SSD area of your experience.
